Tagore’s Geethanjali translation Smt. Elcy Yohannan Sankarathil have been working on is finally finished. As a translator she was responsible for the quality of the work she produced. She has successfully conveyed Tagor’es voice and style through her language and word choices.
Smt. Elcy Yohanan Sankarathil holds a special position as a favored poetess among the émigré writers. She had secured a place of eminence in contemporary American Malayalee writers as a distinguished poetess.
Her translation of Rabindra Nath Tagore’s Geethanjali is not a paraphrase in another language. She has contemplated the poem for meaning beyond the literal which is obvious to the reader who carefully read the poems. The beauty of divine romance Tagore depicted in well-sculpted words has been gracefully rendered into metered Malyalam poetry by this blessed poetess who is the immense pride of all American Malayalee.s It is heard that only a poet can translate poetry well. At the same time we know that translation is a literary creation, a piece of literature in its own right. And translations cannot be always free from flaws. Smt. Sankarathil being a good linguist has done her best to convey the same information and evoke the same emotions to the readers as the original did.
I wish the Literary and other associations recognize her work and suitably reward her for this great accomplishment.
Congratulations and best wishes to Mrs. Elcy Yohanan Sankarathil.
